Prof John P.A Lusingu

Professor John P.A. Lusingu is a Chief Research Officer of the National Institute for Medical Research (NIMR). He graduated his Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) degree in Health Sciences from the University of Copenhagen, Denmark in 2006 focusing on epidemiology and immunity of malaria. Previously, he completed his Medical Degree (MD) in 1994 from the University of Dar es Salaam, Tanzania. Thereafter, he worked as a General Practitioner in the southern highlands of Tanzania for five years as an employee of the Ministry of Health of Tanzania. He was seconded to join NIMR in 2000 with a focus on studying malaria immunity. 

He conducted several field-based studies to evaluate malaria epidemiology and later on joined University of Copenhagen, Denmark under Gates Malaria Partnership consortium where he pursued his Ph.D. Professor John P. A. Lusingu is a Professor of the University of Copenhagen, Denmark with extensive experience in field studies including basic malaria research and clinical trials of malaria drugs and vaccines through phases 1, 2 3 and 4. He completed extension of the Phase 3 study of the RTS,S/AS01 malaria vaccine manufactured by GSK and sponsored by PATH-MVI and Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation at a capacity of Principal Investigator in Korogwe, Tanga, Tanzania.

He was also an overall Principal Investigator of IMPROVE study to find alternative antimalarial drugs to prevent malaria in pregnant women which was conducted in Korogwe and Handeni districts in collaboration with European and USA partners (https://improve-consortium.org/professor-john-lusingu). He was a Senior Fellow of EDCTP2 funded Project on Malaria Research and Capacity building for field trials in Tanzania (MaReCa) in collaboration with University of Copenhagen, Denmark (https://www.edctp.org/projects-2/edctp2-projects/senior-fellowships/). He has mentored and supervised several undergraduate and postgraduate students from University of Copenhagen Denmark, Georgetown University, USA and Tanzanian Universities.

He is currently working in collaboration with Bernhard- Nocht Institute for Tropical Medicine (BNITM) to evaluate transmission of non-malarial fever and enteric diseases as well as on antimicrobial resistance. He is a member of Tanzanian and international scientific technical committees. Prof John P.A. Lusingu has co-authored 132 peer-reviewed health research articles as per PubMed accessed on 23 January 2023 (https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/?term=Lusingu+J&sort=date).  He is a reviewer of several peer-reviewed reputable international scientific journals. He was the Editor-in- Chief of the Tanzania Journal of Health Research. He is an Editorial Board member of several Open Access Journals. He is a member of the Tanganyika Medical Association.

Prof John P. A. Lusingu was the Centre Director of the NIMR Tanga Centre from January 2018 to September 2022.
